A decade after its original release, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit is back with a fresh remaster from Stellar Entertainment Software. But does this updated version of the classic racing game live up to expectations? Buckle up and get ready to find out in this Rapid Review.
As a fan of the Need for Speed franchise, having played Rivals on Xbox 360 and Most Wanted on PS Vita, I was eager to try out Hot Pursuit for the first time on Nintendo Switch. One of the standout features of the series is the ability to play as both a cop and an illegal racer, which adds a unique twist to the gameplay. The map is scattered with different symbols that indicate which type of racer you are playing as, offering a diverse and exciting experience.
The remastered version of Hot Pursuit boasts improved graphics and smoother gameplay, making it a joy to play on the Nintendo Switch. The controls are intuitive, and the game’s mechanics are easy to pick up, even for newcomers to the series. The game’s soundtrack also deserves a mention, with an excellent selection of songs that add to the overall experience.
Overall, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered is a fantastic addition to the franchise, offering classic racing gameplay with a unique twist. The updated graphics and improved gameplay make it a must-play for both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
Starting a race using the map is the sole method that makes complete sense, but I find it perplexing why there exists an open-world mode. The open-world feature lacks the inclusion of fresh racing cars, new missions to embark upon, time trials to conquer, or police chases to evade. It merely serves as a virtual environment for aimless driving, possibly allowing players to explore potential shortcuts. In Hot Pursuit, missions are conveniently initiated from the map, enabling swift entry into races, a feature that aligns flawlessly with the portable nature of a Nintendo Switch game!
Smooth Drifts
In my perspective, the driving experience holds utmost significance in a racing game. I’m thrilled to declare that the handling in Hot Pursuit is remarkably responsive, granting an immense pleasure in maneuvering the cars. Accumulating nitro and unleashing boosts in every direction became an exhilarating routine. I encountered numerous sharp curves, and by pressing the brake button, I effortlessly initiated drifts, enhanced by the precise handling and responsive braking, resulting in an absolute delight while drifting.
During races, I stumbled upon various alternative routes and off-road sections to gain an advantage over my competitors. Some of these alternate paths served as potential slowdowns, urging me to consult the minimap before veering off. What particularly impressed me about Hot Pursuit was its integration of the “Joycon Rumble,” a feature of the Switch that had slipped my attention for a while. There was a noticeable contrast between the silky-smooth asphalt and the gravel-strewn shortcut that led me through a bustling construction site.
While Hot Pursuit offers an immensely enjoyable driving experience, I must admit that occasional crashes couldn’t be avoided. Strangely enough, I found a peculiar enjoyment in witnessing these crashes, as the game’s visual presentation was nothing short of stunning. Crashes unfolded in captivating slow motion, accompanied by mesmerizing particle effects and swirling debris, creating a visually breathtaking spectacle.
Scenic Seacrest
The backdrop for this installment of Need for Speed is the fictional Seacrest County, an American county brought to life. Prior to each race, a captivating sight unfolds as a blue line gracefully winds its way along the roads, revealing the path I would be traversing. Seacrest County comprises a variety of environments, including lush forests, picturesque seaside roads, and vast desert landscapes. While my primary focus remained on the car I was driving, I couldn’t resist stealing a few glances at the surrounding environments. The diversity of these areas added an extra layer of enjoyment to the experience. However, it’s worth noting that the distant hills and mountains, though present, lack the same level of detail and resolution found in closer surroundings.
Undoubtedly, it becomes apparent that this game is a decade old, and unfortunately, the environments haven’t received that much-needed revitalization in this remastered version. However, the cars themselves shine with a remarkable allure. The glossy finish of their exteriors flawlessly reflects the surrounding environment, providing a visually pleasing spectacle. While it may not boast ray tracing technology, the reflections still manage to impress with their remarkable quality.
A Blend of Racing Roles
Hot Pursuit introduces a captivating game of “Cops and Robbers,” showcasing a delightful variety of racing experiences from both sides of the law. In one exhilarating race, I found myself skillfully evading pursuing cops while fiercely battling for the finish line, only to switch roles in the next race and become a cop determined to apprehend illegal racers. However, some of the racing modes did raise questions about how effectively I was safeguarding the civilians of Seacrest County. It’s hard to imagine that a police-supercar time trial alone could effectively combat crime!
Both as a cop and a racer, I had access to a range of special abilities, including spike traps and roadblocks, which could be swiftly deployed during intense pursuits. Although I must confess that even as a cop, navigating through police roadblocks proved to be quite challenging. Additionally, Hot Pursuit offers a cross-platform multiplayer mode, ensuring a seamless experience of finding and joining games with fellow players from different platforms. The inclusion of multiplatform multiplayer is a commendable addition as it expands the pool of available players, guaranteeing there will always be someone to engage in thrilling races with.
Selecting a car and hitting the road toward the finish line is an effortlessly simple process. There’s no need to fine-tune suspension, refill brake fluid, or ensure an ample supply of window washer fluid. In fact, the only customization option available revolves around selecting the color of your car. As you progress through the game, your bounty level, which essentially acts as XP, will gradually rise, granting access to new cars for an exhilarating spin. I found great pleasure in the game’s straightforward approach to progression, as it spared me the need to invest in complex skill trees or similar intricate mechanics.
Conclusion
Need for Speed Hot Pursuit is an outstanding racing game that still holds up a decade after its initial release. The car handling is superb, making it a joy to navigate the tight roads of Seacrest County. The game’s portability and streamlined process for initiating races make it an ideal choice for the Nintendo Switch.
Overall, I highly recommend giving this game a try. If you’re a fan of racing games or the Need for Speed franchise, Hot Pursuit is definitely worth pursuing. Don’t let its age fool you; this game still packs a punch and delivers an exciting and immersive racing experience.
